Moisture-induced cracking in a flexural bilayer with application to historical paintings

چکیده
Crack channelling in a brittle, flexural bilayer, composed of coating adhering to substrate finite thickness, is addressed for the case uniform moisture content (or temperature) variation. The linear stress profile within may lead three different fracture mechanisms, which are crack with delamination absent, length, and unbounded extent. Failure mechanism maps illustrate dependence active mechanism, corresponding critical stress, upon stiffness mismatch between layers ratio interfacial toughness toughness. Although results applicable bilayers wide range applications, study focuses on prediction historical paintings. significance bending bilayer explored by comparing characteristics simply-supported, those rigidly supported that constrained against bending. These two systems representative framing techniques commonly used paintings, simply-supported reflecting regular wooden panel can bend freely, characterizing does not as result cradle additions several horizontal members orthogonal cross-pieces. Independent type technique applied, it shown be avoided paintings when exceeds mode I paint layer. Under these conditions flaking occur visual appearance painting preserved. failure constructed this provide useful tool museum conservators identify acceptable indoor humidity temperature variations such do degrade combination delamination.

Plastic Package Moisture-Induced Cracking
With the older “through-hole” technology packages such as the Dual In-line Package (DIP), soldering to printed circuit boards was accomplished using a wave solder. The DIP leads went through holes in the printed circuit board, where they were exposed to molten solder during the mounting process. The DIP’s body was never subjected directly to the solder melt, because it was protected from the he...

abstract type-ii fuzzy logic has shown its superiority over traditional fuzzy logic when dealing with uncertainty. type-ii fuzzy logic controllers are however newer and more promising approaches that have been recently applied to various fields due to their significant contribution especially when the noise (as an important instance of uncertainty) emerges. during the design of type- i fuz...
15 صفحه اولOn the physics of moisture-induced cracking in metal-glass „copper-silica... interfaces
Environmentally dependent subcritical crack growth, or stress-corrosion cracking, along ceramic-metal interfaces is studied for the silica glass-copper system. Tests were conducted in various gaseous and liquid environments in order to determine their relative effects on stress-corrosion cracking and to gain some insight into the mechanisms that control interfacial crack growth. In agreement wi...
متن کاملApplication of Anti-Symmetric Flexural Modes for the Detection of Moisture
This research focus on exploring the effects moisture absorbed by a layer of hygroscopic film coated on the wedge tip along that anti-symmetric flexural (ASF) modes propagate. A shear wave transducer is applied to measure the signals of wedge wave propagating along the wedge tips. Velocity of the ASF mode is indicated to decrease while the moisture is absorbed by the hygroscopic film. Also, the...
متن کاملCasting light on the darkening of colors in historical paintings.
The degradation of colors in historical paintings affects our cultural heritage in both museums and archeological sites. Despite intensive experimental studies, the origin of darkening of one of the most ancient pigments known to humankind, vermilion (α-HgS), remains unexplained. Here, by combining many-body theoretical spectroscopy and high-resolution microscopic x-ray diffraction, we clarify ...
